About the Initiative
A newborn screening is a medical test that can diagnose newborn diseases (such as congenital hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria, sickle cell anemia, galactosemia, G6PDD, and more) immediately after birth, allowing early treatment and preventing detrimental consequences such as intellectual disability, stunted brain growth, developmental issues, and death. Essentially, a newborn screening can save lives and decrease infant mortality significantly.

While this medical test is provided to all babies born in the U.S., it is not mandated in India, causing low-income and underprivileged families to be unable to screen their child. I am working on this initiative to provide access to all families through an awareness campaign to spread information about the importance of a newborn screening and through a fundraiser to help fund free newborn screenings for underprivileged families in specific hospitals in India.
About Me
I'm Aishu. I'm a passionate high school student who aims to improve newborn health around the world (in particular India) by increasing access to newborn screening tests.
I will be talking about my awareness campaign and fundraiser, as well as how you can get involved in helping with this initiative! Be sure to check out my blog as well, where I will be updating the progress of this project!
